The Little Chef
... cooking classes for pre-schoolers ...

The Little Chef cooking classes are designed to enable very young children to cook as independently as possible under the gentle guidance of an adult. Your child, as "head chef" will get to "read" a pictorial version of a real recipe and do much of the preparation, with the teacher, as the helper.

Cooking provides many tactile experiences, such as kneading and rolling out pizza dough, tearing fresh lettuse leaves, or breaking eggs. All other senses are stimulated, too. There are the sounds and smells of cooking, and fingers to lick! And the children look forward to sampling the finished product. But what fascinates young children aboval all is performing those ordinary cooking tasks that we adults take for granded. It's a challenge for little ones to pour milk into a meauring cup, squeeze a lemon, mix batter, or flip a pancake. Managing these jobs gives them a great sense of accomplishment!

  • What do children learn from cooking?
  • A blossoming of creativity and sense of aesthetics
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Early math skills (counting, measuring, sequencing of events, an understanding of time)
  • Pre-reading and beginning reading skills (numeral, symbol, and word recognition)
  • Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
  • Science skills (chemistry, temperature, cause and effect)
  • Patience and self control
  • Language skills (observing, describing, predicting outcomes)
  • Ability to follow directions
  • A sense of teamwork
  • Food literacy (an openness to try new foods, and appreciation about the foods we eat, what they are and where they come from)

PATHS: Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies
…social skills classes for preschoolers…

The ability to interact effectively with others is critical for life success. However, social competency skills are often under developed in young children. While some children may be advanced in using language, they are often immature in self-regulation and taking the perspective of others.

During this class your child will learn to read the social cues of others, discover ways of appropriately expressing their own needs, try on different emotions and begin to feel the benefit of positive communication with others. Taught by a licensed school psychologist with a fun approach, this class provides common social situations to strengthen your child’s social skills.

The idea that preschoolers can have good social “graces” is a fairly new expectation. However, research indicates that children who obtain these skills are more liked in school and have more self confidence. Each session is 8 weeks.  You do not have to be a student at Newport Coast Preschool to enroll in an Enrichment Class.  For prices on Enrichment Classes please contact the preschool office.
